Laura Adamietz’s dissertation presents a precise analysis of German and international anti-discrimination law and established jurisdiction regarding gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity. This is combined with an overview of pertinent, yet in current legal interpretation insufficiently considered, findings of gender studies, which is not only valuable for a legal readership. On this basis, the author develops an interpretation of the anti-discrimination juridical term ‘gender’ as “gender as expectation”, which adds both complexity and applicability to it. The combination of theoretical accuracy, interdisciplinary perspective, and solution orientation is a central merit of this book.
