Abstract

Linguist Gottburgsen presents both a theoretical and empirical analysis of speech-related gender stereotypes -of common ideas about “male” and “female” ways of speaking. Gottburgsen takes a critical look at current socio-linguistic and social-psychological literature on gender, language behaviour and stereotyping and explains the meaningof language-related gender stereotypes. She furthermore presents the results of three survey studies of German-speaking university students. According to these studies, university students, regardless of sex and of their ideas about gender roles, continue to have quite stereotypical views on “gender-appropriate” language behaviour.
