Janne Mende’s ambitious publication offers an autonomous, dialectic definition of the relationship between universalism and cultural relativism. This conceptual part is connected to a detailed and critical analysis of the central lines of argumentation surrounding the practice of female genital mutilation. This book, clearly structured and always trying to justify and reason, is in methodical contrast to previous studies on both topics; however, it leaves some doubts regarding the construction of the antithetical relationship unaddressed. The comprehensive and differentiated insight into historical and current debates, an important merit of the book, needs to be particularly honored.Downloads
