This dissertation examines the social and legal situation of women in German touring companies in the 17th and 18th century. Moreover, Puschmann investigates the actresses’ opportunities for agency and creativity in their specific lifeworlds, the ways in which they positioned themselves and the ways in which they were constructed and perceived by others. This work provides a historical perspective on current understandings of theatre as well as the role of women in theatre, and offers basic information for further research on the history of theatre.Downloads
