Susanne de Ponte gathers in her volume, which consists of a comprehensively illustrated catalogue accompanied by a theatre-historical tract, numerous examples of trouser roles within the three main genres of west European theatre: straight theatre, musical theatre and dance theatre. These are described on the basis of three types the author distills: the real, the disguised and the ‘fake’ trouser role. After a short overview over the beginnings of theatre from antiquity onwards, the author focuses on west European theatre between the 17th and 20th century. The volume offers a rich stock of imagery and a synopsis of cultural history and the history of theatre on the topic of the trouser role and accompanying concepts of gender.Downloads
