Muriel González Athenas’ study on the economy in the city of cologne aims at examining the hypothesis of the displacement of women in craftsmanship in the Early Modern Age from 1650 to 1750. Her deep drillings in rich source material from the goldsmith, wool weaver, linen weaver, and tailor cooperatives, with a total of ten guilds, bring a new perspective to light: a static discrimination or displacement is out of the question; the possibilities for action and the scopes of women in craftsmanship were much greater in this time than commonly assumed. In the light of her perspective of doing-gender, González Athenas claims that a decodable and accepted being-guild-craftswoman as proper mode of existence can be presupposed.Downloads
