Abstract

Beate Hochholdinger-Reiterer's postdoctoral thesis deals with how gender is incorporated into language, and how these incorporations function in the process of writing theater history during the age of German-speaking enlightenment. She reveals linguistic codes - which serve as 'secret archives' - and analyzes the symbolic order of gender they convey. In that era, processes of literarization, institutionalization and subsidization lead to the establishment of the 'one' theatre. At the same time, however, these processes contributed to debates about the national state and gender and, concerning the latter, constructed a 'patrilineal genealogy', thus rendering voiceless 'other' discourses representing 'other' orders which - verifiably - also existed in those times of change.
