Anna Katharina Knaup presents here a first configuration of genre for the German-language ‘Männerroman’, thus contributing to fundamental research in the field of genre theory. At least as concerns contemporary light fiction, she questions the tradition whereby male authorship is considered the ‘norm’, so that - unlike ‘women’s writing’ - it need not be labeled specifically. Her comparative analysis convinces in terms of literary criticism; from a gender theory perspective, though, it would have been desirable had she used language and gender concepts in a more conscious way.
