Anna Döpfner presents a first analysis of gender relations in museums of technology. Due to her long-term experience at the German Museum of Technology/Berlin, she both brings an insider's view and offers a vast array of examples from the international landscape of museums, while displaying a profound knowledge of Women's and Gender Studies. The author not only shows the prevalence of a male-oriented, narrow and affirmative notion of 'technology' that excludes women, but also analyzes the historical causes of this structural inequality and offers short-term and long-term approaches for changing the practice of museums. She advocates a critical cultural history of technology in which to put up for discussion social and gender-specific conditions, beneficial effects, consequences, economies and the faith in progress.Downloads
