Kathrin Baumstark examines the motif of „Death and the Maiden“ on the basis of visual artworks from the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age by Hans Selbald Beham, Hans Baldung Grien and Niklaus Manuel Deutsch. She includes contemporary concepts of death, dying, and postmortal existence and highlights the construction of gender roles. She adopts a critical stance towards her selected literature and includes a variety of perspectives and discourses in her line of reasoning.
