The history of trans (sexuality) in the Federal Republic is a history of changing understandings of gender and gender order. In his dissertation, Adrian de Silva considers the developments and legal implications of these understandings in sexology, jurisprudence, legislation and the transgender movement. He analyzes the emergence and reform processes of the transsexual law (Gesetz über die Änderung der Vornamen und die Feststellung der Geschlechtszugehörigkeit in besonderen Fällen – law on the change of given names and the determination of gender in special cases) and its momentous amalgamation of law, medicine and gender politics. Historical and current debates on the "Borders of the Gender Regime" in Germany can be understood and categorized on the basis of de Silva's book.
