The collected volume is part of the historiography of the women's movements of the 1970s and 1980s, which were formed under the slogan of 'women's liberation'. It contains case studies on feminist activism in different Western European contexts and on different political issues or cultural practices. The overriding question of how to assess the effects and long-term consequences of women's liberation movements is intended to go beyond mere stocktaking – a challenge that, however, only a few contributions of the volume meet.
