After numerous editions of his biographically-oriented publications on masculinity and socialization, Lothar Böhnisch now presents a social theory of masculinity. Starting point is the dialectic between capitalist and social spheres. Furthermore, the author uses a variety of theoretical approaches. Throughout the volume there are seven terms that he calls “structurings of masculinity”: above all helplessness and need as well as externalization and violence form the focal points of male coping mechanisms. Böhnisch sees a perspective in the development of a culture of recognition and (self-) care. On the other hand, the commodified modes of masculinity proffered by neo-capitalism offer no solution.
