Abstract

Drawing on seven pertinent literary examples, Vahsen analyses the literary responses of German-speaking women writers to the French Revolution. Ranging from Therese Huber’s novel, Die Familie Seldorf, in which a female protagonist becomes actively involved in the Revolution, to Sophie La Roche’s descriptions of virtuous-moral small-scale societies in German provinces or in exile in the US, Vahsen shows different settings in which conservative models of reform are being played out in response to the French Revolution.
