Lehnert’s work introduces and examines five female protagonists of different novels, all of them passionate readers. Lehnert investigates what reading means to these five women, what kinds of needs they fulfil by reading, and how reading influences their lives. Using the five readers’ different reading experiences as an example, Lehnert points to the various functions which reading can take on. Lehnert’s book, written in an essay-like style, attempts to offer an informative and entertaining contribution to the history of reading.Downloads
