Abstract

The “essentialism-versus-constructivism” debate which was sparked by Butler’s work, Gender Trouble, a debate centered around the question how to best think about materiality and bodies, continues to be relevant to gender studies to the present day. Is it at all possible to avoid gender as a category? 15 essays from scholars in cultural studies, philosophy, psycho-analysis, and politics document the current development of the debates that were inspired by Butler’s ideas about feminist constructions. Using a variety of different approaches, the authors attempt to mediate between the concepts of “body” and “discourse” and to conceive of materiality in a new way.
