Stefan Neuhaus’s book investigates narrative texts from Daniel Defoe’s Moll Flanders to Thomas Brussig’s Helden wie wir. The readings look at the enactment and subversion of asymmetric gender hierarchies and at the construction of symmetric gender relations. While the textual analysis is aimed at uncovering power relations, the author’s very choice of texts—which mainly stem from the Western canon—perpetuates, once again, long established gender hierarchies of a canon that is known for its preferential treatment of male authors.Downloads
