Abstract

Kerstin Barndt’s study investigates novels by Vicki Baum and Irmgard Keun. Taking three texts as an example, Barndt analyses not only popular novels, but also their reception by revealing the importance of the female reader. Against the context of the literature of ‘New Objectivity’, the study suggests a new perspective on discourses of the ‘New Woman’ as popularised modes of conduct for women.
