Abstract

While the situation of single mothers has been duly researched in Germany, very rarely has attention been given to fathers who live separated from their children. This is truly remarkable when one surveys the number, rising into the millions, of fathers and children affected. In the year 2000 alone, 95,000 married couples with dependant children (146,000) divorced. Gerhard Amendt’s empirical study can be seen as the first German-language, book length, scientific publication on “divorced fathers.” Arendt answers the following questions from the perspective of the fathers: How do fathers talk about divorce and how do they deal with the consequences of divorce? How do they spend time with their children? Why do some of them cut off contact to their children? This new access to the issues of divorce or separation with regard to the father was long overdue and brings new perspectives and realizations to the scientific debate.
