The sociologists Bettina Heintz, Martina Merz, and Christina Schumacher pursue the question of which factors, mechanisms, and practices are the cause of the under-representation of women in the scientific system. Additionally, they ask how gender difference articulates itself with regards to work. The four institutes of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) serve as the sites for study. In each institute, epistemological fields, social forms of organization, and cultural identities are examined in order to then confront the findings in a second step with gender dichotomy. The authors’ methodology binds scientific sociology with gender studies.Downloads
