Abstract

The topic of Islam is topical and the interest in the issue of „Muslim women“ is also on the rise. The contradictory consequences of a global tendency towards Islamification for female Muslims are examined in the contributions from the anthology edited by Mechthild Rumpf, Ute Gerhard, and Mechthild M. Jansen. The determining factors of the individual gaze directed at „the others“ as well as the complexity of gender hierarchy in societies and communities shaped by Islam are elaborated. Above all, the authors of the volume are concerned with determining the diverse meanings and attributed meanings of the „Islam“ factor for women’s lives and self-understanding.
