Abstract

FThis anthology focuses on gender relations in different historical and contemporary indigenous societies of Latin America. Utilizing the feminist approach to difference as suggested by Henrietta Moore (1994), the editors’ interest is especially directed toward the conceptualization and the concrete distribution of social “power“ between genders. The socio-anthropological concepts of gender polarity, complementary gender, and gender parallelism, which were developed in this context by feminist ethnologists, emerge as the starting point for a discussion and critical reevaluation of the already existent “ethnographies of genders.“ In addition to a series of new contributions, the anthology offers a wonderful overview on the state of gender studies in Latin America.
