Abstract

The cultural techniques of asceticism are portrayed in this richly detailed collected volume. The book illustrates its ambivalence based on self-empowerment on the one side and self-discipline on the other. Asceticism produces the order of gender but can also undermine this. The aesthetics of asceticism contain creative and excessive potential.
