Abstract

The figure of Genoveva is an appropriate site for examining the negotiation of the relationship between gender and religion or nation. The work at hand illuminates the manner in which gender discourse is influenced by religious and national motives on the basis of six Genoveva texts from the so-called „Sattelzeit” or saddle period, a term used for German literature of the period before and after the French Revolution. It remains to see how gender configurations inscribe Christian religion or national discourse.
