Abstract

Jutta Wergen examines gender constructions in traditionally male careers by interviewing women who work as truck drivers, ship captains, and bus and tram drivers in public transportation. In doing so she can show that these careers provide very different contexts for gender arrangements, from traditional division of work to its reversal. The core of the realization of this study-this is anticipated here-is fascinating and amazingly simple: the division between a “professional” and a “private” gender.
