‘Busy Bees,’ ‘Deferrers,’ and ‘Perseverers’ – On the Cultural Re-Poling of Work and Family

How can we reach a satisfactory balance between work and family for all parties in a global economy? Arlie Russel Hochschild examines the implementation of programs geared toward finding this balance in a top American company. She shows that in contrast to the stated goals of such programs, the measures contribute to the acceleration of a negative change in values: Particularly for women, but also for men, the company becomes home, whereas the family only means additional work as a “second shift.”Downloads
