For the first time, Monika Mattes’ book presents a comprehensive and detailed examination of the history of the recruitment of foreign women workers in Germany from the 1950s to the 1970s. Through her systematic inclusion of the category of gender, Mattes questions and partially reformulates current research on the theme of “guest work,” which, till now, has been for the most part gender-blind. Moreover, the author examines the structural and discursive connections between the gainful employment of women and the employment of foreigners, thus conjoining historical migration and gender research.Downloads
