Abstract

The authors impressively document “female neglect” to represent a diagnosis, which has lasting and, according to today’s standards, horrifying educational effects on the disadvantaged girls. Using the example of the fortunes of female pupils under state care, the authors present the century-long legacies of an education based on drills and obedience. The multifaceted study is based on a broad range of sources and presents important analysis of gender history that demands consideration, particularly in light of the current range of discussions on childhood during and after the Second World War.
