Abstract

Christine Hanke examines the production of difference in physical anthropology around 1900. Her approach, which uses discourse analysis and media theory, displays the performative character of natural scientific research. The work facilitates a differentiated approach to and critique of the creation of ‘race’ and ‘gender.’ In addition, it offers a wealth of insight that often retreats to the background of anthropological publications due to streamlining and that normally does not surface again in mainstream scientific history and research.
