Sybille Steinbacher’s volume Female Comrades (Volksgenossinnen) contains essays that examine the role of women during the propagation of the nationalistic structural model of Germany as an “ethnic community.” The subject of the analytical descriptions is the self-conception and historical experience of women, who as recognized members of the national socialist community laid claim to specific spheres of action. The war years, in particular, offered these “female comrades” chances for promotion and to expand their fields of activity. The contributions in this volume build on the rather minimal existing knowledge about the interpretive patterns and manners of conduct of a large number of non-persecuted so-called Aryan women during National Socialism.Downloads
