Abstract

In her analysis of those speaker-positions given to subaltern women in India, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak formulates a critique of the missing sense of responsibility found in western intellectuals. At the same time she develops an ambitious standard for the examination of colonial practices of dominance. While although her call for responsibility lags behind the individual necessity to take into account the institutional and historical requirements of academic work, her theory on the subordinate subject carries great analytical potential. Conversely, the conversation between Spivak and Judith Butler is disappointing and does not live up to the expectations of a politically informed public.
