Abstract

This treatment of sociologist Robert K. Merton’s anomy theory intends to “find relevant differences between women and men that could explain the uneven proportion of the sexes in registered criminal offenses” (p. 223). This succeeds insofar as the author is able to determine structural variables that could raise the possibility of criminal activity. Gender plays (only) a role inasmuch as the proportion of women is lower in those groups of people that are particularly at risk of engaging in criminal activity.
