The scientific discipline of mathematics carries the nimbus of being objective and de-personalized and thus does not seem accessible to sociological analysis. Starting from a constructivist sociology of the sciences, Bettina Heintz investigates the reasons for the epistemic particularity of mathematics. Shifting the focus from the mathematicians’ knowledge to their actions, she succeeds in gaining new insights into the process of generating mathematical knowledge.Downloads
