When it comes to gender mainstreaming and to developmental possibilities beyond gender stereotypical attributions, schools are important societal institutions because they are elementary educational facilities. Very different gender-analytical approaches are currently being seen in the area of schools: Boys who have been marked the “losers of the educational system,” girls who rarely succeed in professional careers despite their better profiles upon graduation and must select from a very small spectrum of career choices. How can boys be inspired by reading and girls excited by physics? Which gender-role stereotypes are effective and where can schools affect changes? Which competencies do schools, school directors, and teachers need? The authors describe how gender competence, as understood by gender mainstreaming, can take place in schools and what exceptions and resistances are experienced.Downloads
