The essays in this volume illuminate the most diverse forms of past and present acts of beauty from the perspective of Cultural Studies. Fashionable clothing, decorative cosmetics, diets, body sculpting, cosmetic operations, etc. are available to the individual as techniques to achieve the ideal body image that is often communicated through the media. The instructive and appropriately illustrated volume sees these body practices as both social and aesthetic phenomena. The authors address compulsion, the desire for simulation, and the relationship between (gender) identity and (gender) performance.Downloads
