Maximilian Schochow offers up a material-rich study that specifically turns to medical information on hermaphroditism since the 16th century. He reconstructs the developments and changes in media descriptions of hermaphroditism into the 19th century. The work is useful for similar examinations insofar as it reviews material not normally readily available and on this basis presents a series of thought provoking conclusions. At the same time, the analyses provided should also be critically reviewed.
