Abstract

The bio-bibliographic lexicon contains the biographies of 43 bourgeois and 51 noble women who lived or functioned in the royal seat of Weimar and the university city of Jena and who were involved in the relevant social circles. The diversity and creative power of female activities during this time becomes apparent. The theoretical construction of women’s domains, which is the intention of the editors of this extremely useful lexicon as well as the author of the monograph on three female writers around 1800, is only partially convincing: the reference work cannot contribute its new insights to this concept, but instead to thorough research in archives and on already available literature. On the other hand, the second study offers little new insight into its protagonists.
