In this book, Marquardt aims to describe and analyse “the political career, the sphere of influence, the importance of female politicians as well as the way in which they viewed themselves during the initial period of the newly founded Federal Republic of Germany” (p. 13). Focusing on the first three parliamentary terms of the West German Bundestag, from1949 to 1961, Marquardt first offers a short description of the political characteristics as well as of the gender relations in the Bundestag during this period of time. She then illustrates the political and personal development of seven female parliamentarians. The main emphasis of Marquardt’s study is put on the seven parliamentarians’ work on policy concerning women’s issues.Downloads
