The volume Maternities adds to the debate in human geography on the correlation between bodies and spaces through the examination of aspects of motherhood. The collection of essays sees itself as an addition – in theory, concept, and method – to the “feminist poststructuralist theory that holds on firmly to materiality.” In keeping with this, the individual essays focus on the intersection between materiality and discursiveness as well as between those dualisms connected to the topic of motherhood (for example, the opposition between private home births and institutionalized hospital births). The strengths of the book lie in the de-naturalization of motherliness and the corporeality that supposedly belongs to it; unfortunately, the application of the question to the constitution of spaces is only hinted at.Downloads
