Abstract

Eva Rieger lets the reader dive into the world and life of Wagner. She not only provides an overview on Wagner’s important works and personal relationships, but she also shows how gender is not only (re-)produced in the stories of the operas, the text, but also in Wagner’s music(-language). Rieger manages to show impressively, how and in what manner Wagner uses his musical language in order to create atmospheres, characteristics, as well as even gender roles in his operas. In doing so, it becomes clear how Wagner’s biographically verified life experiences correspond with the images of the feminine that he creates in his operas.
