Abstract

In her religious, sociological, and gender-theoretical study, Heidemarie Winkel uses the example of the ecumenical Women’s World Day of Prayer to illustrate the varied social practices of Arab Christians. In doing so, she clearly delineates the current transformation of religious symbolization of gender, specifically with regard to the reconstruction of gender-differentiated codes and configurations of meaning. The study, which brings into focus the little-studied topic of Arab Christianity, is also to be read as a contribution to separating the ideas of religion and culture that are often conflated with Islam.
