How do images create and depict gender relations? Pictorial concepts (illustrations and perceptions) of the feminine usually have an affirmative character in cultural practices: they (re-)present and stabilize role models and behavioral norms (particularly discoursively regulated ones). These pictorial concepts are based on and intensified by emotional codes. However, images that are seemingly affirmative of the feminine can also – sometimes unintentionally – uncover orders of gaze and challenge attributions. Using Monica Bonvicini’s artistic work Destroy, she said as an example, these considerations are developed from the perspective of pictorial critique and the prevalent pictorial concept of a ‘sentimental femininity’ is challenged.Downloads
