Allmendiger reports on two projects which are supported by the Federal Ministry of Family, Seniors, Women, and Youth. The projects deal with women who interrupted their employment careers for different reasons and who want to return to their jobs but find themselves facing severe structural problems in the conservative welfare state with its ambivalent gender orders and work regulations. The comprehensive and prolific report uncovers these “shadow women” who can no longer be encompassed by the notion of the traditional housewife and who present innovative challenges to a more gender-equal labor market and social policy.
