This DVD is a collection of 19 short comedies from 1910 to 1914. According to the curator Mariann Lewinsky, the still young comedy genre was the central venue for discussions about gender roles in film production. The movies show female comedians who challenge traditional gender roles and broaden women’s space of action. One chapter, which also contains documentary footage, is dedicated to the suffragettes. Using feminist theories on (early) film, the included booklet integrates the movies into cinematic history, unfortunately without connecting them to the political events of contemporary history.Downloads
