Abstract

Sally Macarthur undertakes a repositioning of the figure of the female composer in contemporary music production drawing on the philosophies of Deleuze and Guattari, resp. their feminist development through Grosz and Braidotti (among others). Based on concepts such as ‘difference,’ ‘virtuality,’ ‘becoming,’ or ‘deterritorialization,’ Macarthur deconstructs the master narrative of autonomous, innovative, creative, male music production. Macarthur exemplifies her theses with the analysis of music by the composers Sofia Gubaidulina, Elena Kats-Chernin, and Anne Boyd as well as with the discussion of the conditions and contents of contemporary composition lessons.
