Abstract

The title of this review paraphrases the introductory sentence of this collection of essays. MacKenzie and Wjcman argue that in order to understand contemporary Western societies one has to take into account the material resources upon which social relationships are based. Writing against technological determinism, MacKenzie and Wajcman introduce a research programme which emphasises the social shaping of technology. Technological objects and arrangements are shaped by their social context. Both the economic and the cultural conditions of innovation and implemention are ‘embodied’ in technological structures, and thus help stabilise social patterns.
