Abstract

The subject of Margarethe Herzog’s study is migration and its literary processing. The texts considered stem from three Latin-American contemporary authors, Christina Garcia from Cuba, Esmeralda Santiago from Puerto Rico and Julia Alvarez from the Dominican Republic. The central theme of all three novels is the tension that exists between their Caribbian origins and the effort to find a home in the US. Margarethe Herzog considers the relationship of gender and migration in the texts, as well as questions regarding the integration and worth of the younger generation of women migrants. The work is clearly structured on a methodological level. It is made up of two parts: in the first part, Margarethe Herzog deals with the origins of the authors and the theory of the term “migration"; she devotes the second part to the interpretation of the selected novels.
