The collected volume Media—Diversity—Difference. On the Media Construction of Social Difference (Medien—Diversität—Ungleichheit. Zur medialen Konstruktion sozialer Differenz) edited by Ulla Wischermann and Tanja Thomas, thematizes the representation and reproduction of social inequality or belonging in the media. The thirteen essays of the volume offer insight into ongoing and completed research projects that analyze processes of the media construction of social difference through the theoretically and empirically founded example of individual media contents. The theoretical background spans Postcolonial Studies, Critical Whiteness Studies, and even Queer Studies. The essays illuminate the continuing position of dominance taken up by the white, male, heteronormative and homophobic gaze in today’s society. The volume thus makes an important contribution to the analysis of media strategies of social exclusion.Downloads
