Abstract

The authors of the collected volume at hand attempt a reassessment of the work of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) in the context of current theoretical debates. They question how to best locate the artist within the contemporary Mexican and European art scene. The authors analyze the interplay between life, work, and reception of the artist by utilizing theoretical approaches from research on intermediality, gender, performance, and hybridity as well as inspirations from postcolonial theory. The interest in the staging of the fragmented female body in the context of cultural hybridity ties the individual essays together. This is unfortunately not made clear in the title of the volume.
