Stauffer presents an excellent study on the ironic staging of gender-specific topics. With literary historical precision, Stauffer contextualizes gender confusions during the fin de siècle with special consideration of the works of Annette Kolbs and Franziska zu Reventlow and with the help of an original methodological approach. Stauffer convincingly proves that the ironic approach to the femme fragile and the femme fatale, the decadents and the dandy functions to expose gender as a construction. Judith Butler’s theory on subversive performativity is proven to the letter. Stauffer believes, however, that the term irony is more precise for the description of these methods of gender construction than the term parody favored by Butler among others.Downloads
